Setting the threshold
Too far and they give up, too near and you give it away.

Too far and they give up; too near and you give it away. The right number comes out of a simple sum: what the customer spent before the prize, against what the prize costs you.
A café at 18 a cup on six stamps: 90 riyals in before a prize that costs 5. The same café on twelve stamps: 198 riyals, and half the people who started forgot the card on the way. The first gathers members; the second gathers half-empty cards.
The practical rule
The rule that works: let a regular reach the first prize inside two to three weeks. A twice-a-week customer means 4 to 6 stamps.
